doesn’t spoil your present.

NONE of your business.

Give the time, some time.

happiness except YOU yourself.

problems in the world.

“The greatest gift you can
give to somebody is your
own personal development. I used to say “If you will take care of me, I will take care of you.” Now I say “I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me.”
“I remind myself every morning, nothing I say
this day will teach me
anything. So if I’m going

“Sometimes it is better to be kind than to be right. We do not need an
intelligent mind that speaks, but a patient heart that listens.”
“We’re all seeking that special person who is right for us. But if you’ve been through enough relationships, you begin to suspect there’s no right person, just different flavors of wrong.
Why is this? Because you yourself are wrong in some way and you seek out partners who are wrong in some complementary way. But it takes a lot of living to grow fully into your own wrongness. And it isn’t until you finally run up against your deepest demons, your unsolvable problems—the ones that make you truly who you are—that we’re ready to find a lifelong mate. Only then do you finally know what you’re looking for. You’re looking for the wrong person. But not just any wrong person: the right wrong person—someone you lovingly gaze upon and think, “This is the problem I want to have. I will find that special person who is wrong for me in just the right way. Let our scars fall in love.”
“Be the change you want to see in this world. Glory lies in the ATTEMPT to reach your goal and not in reaching it.”
“Keep your thoughts positive,
your thoughts become your words
Keep your words positive,
your words become your behavior
Keep your behavior positive,
your behavior becomes your habit
Keep your habits positive,
your habits become your values
Keep your values positive,
your values become your destiny.”
“We all want to be extraordinary and we all just want to fit in.
Unfortunately, extraordinary people rarely fit in.”
“So why are we so quick to cut away pieces of ourselves to suit
a particular relationship, a job,
a circle of friends, incessantly
editing who we are until we fit in. The most exhausting activity is pretending to be what you know you are not.”
“The greatest challenge in life is
discovering who you really are…
the second greatest is being
happy with what you find.”
“Motivation comes from looking at the things you want and realizing what it takes to get it.”
“Anyone can run away,
it’s super easy. Facing
problems and working
through them, that’s
what makes you strong.”
“The moment you’re
ready to quit is usually the moment right before
Don’t give up.”
“Here’s all you have to do to ruin every relationship of your life: Play fair. If you play fair, you will ruin all of them. Play fair and all your relationships will be ruined.
If I make a mistake, I want you to help me, not get back at me. If I fail, that is exactly when I need you to do better, not worse. If I do something wrong,
I need for you to rise above it and show me, and be a force to get us on the right track, not to cause the situation to deteriorate into getting even.
The problem is that operating by the principle of playing fair, all it takes for any relationship to go sour is for one person not to perform, then the other one will do the same. Under the “play fair” system, deterioration is inevitable. Give back
better than you are given.
People who succeed in life do not go around
settling scores. They do not even keep score.
They “run up the score” by doing good to others, even when the others do not deserve it. They give them better than they are given. And as a result,
they often bring the other person up to their level instead of being brought down to the level of the other.”
“Hold on to what’s important. Let your worries go.
No matter how you look at it, some things just don’t make sense. The way to choose to carry on is what matters.”
“Look for three things in
a person– intelligence,
energy and integrity.
If they don’t have the last,
don’t even bother
with the first two”
“The most beautiful people
we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering,
known struggle, known loss, and have found their way. Out of the depths, these people have an
appreciation, a sensitivity,
and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion,
gentleness and a deep loving
concern. Beautiful people…
DO NOT JUST HAPPEN.”
“If an egg is broken by an
outside force, life ends.
If an egg is broken by an
inside force, then life begins.
Great things happen
from the inside.”
“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is
a necessary ingredient in
living. It’s a way of
looking at life though the wrong end of a telescope. Which what I do, and that

“We are all a little weird
and life’s a little weird,
And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual

can make is to give up on
yourself and stop challenging yourself for fear of failure. Keep moving forward with

“Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.
It will make or break a company …
a church … a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our
attitude … I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you … we are in charge of our Attitudes.”
– Charles Swindell
“Every search, every new job,
every new relationship begins with beginners luck. And every search, every dream ends with the victor’s being severely tested.
Before a dream is realized, the soul of the world tests everything that was learned along the way and
perseverance is always a factor
towards reaching a destination.”
– The Alchemist
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired
of doing the hard work
you already done.”
“When asked what surprised him most about humanity,
answered “Man”. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not
enjoy the present: The result
being that he does not live in the present or future: he lives as if he is never going to die,
and then dies having never

over the field and never catch it.
But if you sit quietly in the grass it will come and sit on
“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which
difficulties and obstacles vanish.”
“Patience is not the ability to wait. Waiting is a fact of life.
Patience is the ability to keep
a good attitude while waiting.”
“And attitude while being patient is the difference between and
ordeal and an adventure.”
Dear Significant other
When you truly came into my life, something changed inside of me. Something shifted. It was slow but it happened. Suddenly the world wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about what I wanted. It changed into a world of what you needed. At first it was painful, living for yourself is easy, living for others is the hardest thing you can do, but when you can make a choice to live for others and not yourself…something happens. Something changes.
Living for others is the secret sauce.
When you live for others and not yourself, you arrive at moments of happiness.
Moments of gratitude. Moments of
contentment. Contentment is the holy grail. It’s the ultimate prize. It’s a prize you win and then you misplace it, then you have to go find it again. But it’s in that pursuit of contentment that you find adventure, you find love and you find out what you’re made of.
– Soul Pancake
“One of the hardest lessons in life is letting go. Whether it’s guilt, anger, love, loss or betrayal. Change is never easy. We fight to hold on and we fight to let go”
“Letting go means trading
something that’s not working
for freedom, and for the
possibility of receiving
something in the future that
really, truly, does. Let go of
emotions, relationships and
situations that you know are not
allowing you to be happy”
– Doe Zantamata
“People call these things
imperfections, but they’re
not, that’s the good stuff.
And then we get to choose who we let into our weird
You’re not perfect sport.
And let me save you the
suspense. This girl you met,
she isn’t perfect either.
But the question is: Whether or not you’re perfect for each other. That’s the whole deal. That’s what it’s about.”
– Good Will Hunting
A storm hit the night before and washed up thousands of star fish on the beach. An old man saw a boy throwing star fishes back into the ocean and said to the boy “The sun
is coming up and will dry the star
fishes to death, I’m afraid you are not going to make much of a difference.”
The boy replied “I made a difference
to this one” and threw the star fish back into the ocean.
“We all have the opportunity to
create change. You might not be able to change the entire world, but at least you can change a small part of it,
“I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I still can do something: and because I cannot
do everything, I will not refuse to
do something that I can do.”
“Pain is temporary. It may last for a minute or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take it’s place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. That surrender, even the smallest
act of giving up, stays with me.
So when I feel like quitting,
I ask myself, which would I rather live with? Face up to that question,
and finding a way to go on,
is the real reward.”
– Lance Armstrong
“When you don’t quit you will find
success. But always remember
success is not a matter of exclusive
individual merit (simple hard work and extraordinary effort), a portion goes to timing, place, special opportunities and people opening doors. Who can you thank for where you are?”
“Before a dream is realized,
the soul of the world tests everything
that was learned along the way.
Your heart many times will tell you
not to go on. Naturally, it’s afraid that,
in pursuing your dreams,
you might lose everything you won.
So why should you listen to your heart? Because you will never again to able to keep it quiet. Even if you pretend not to have heard what it tells you,
it will always be there inside you,
repeating to you what you’re thinking about life and about the world.
Everyone on earth has a treasure that
awaits him. But, unfortunately, very few
follow the path laid out for them- the
path to their happiness.”
– The Alchemist
“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost
almost 300 games. Twenty six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
– Michael Jordan
“The most beautiful people
I’ve known are those who
have known trials,
have known struggles,
have known loss,
and found there way out
of the depths.”
“I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it’s not the answer.”
“The trouble with so many of us is
that we underestimate the power of simplicity. We have a tendency it seems to over complicate our lives. And as the pace of life continues to race along in the outside world, we forget that we have the power to control our lives regardless of what’s going on outside.”
“Sometimes it’s as simple as taking a step back and realizing what’s
important in your life – what you can live with, but more importantly…what you can’t live without.”
“A pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life.
It is the tear [that results] from the injury of the oyster.
The treasure of our being in this world is also produced by an
injured life. If we had not been wounded, if we had not been
injured, then we will not
produce the pearl.”
– Stephan Hoeller
“Character cannot be
developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be
strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”
“We work hard to disown the
parts of our lives that were painful, difficult or sad. But just as we can’t rip chapters out of a book and
expect the story to still make sense, so we cannot rip chapters out of our past and expect our lives to still make sense.
Keep every chapter of your life
intact, and keep on turning the pages. Sooner or later you’ll
understand why every scene,
every chapter was needed.”
“The past is behind.
Learn from it.
The future is ahead.
Prepare for it.
The present is here live it.”
“I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands, you need to be able to throw something back. I’ve learned that even when
I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same as making a “life”. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart,
I usually make the right decision.”
“I have always looked down a lot,
watching where I step, overthinking where I place my feet for fear of making a mistake, being seen, or falling down and getting hurt. It stems from many things in my past. But I’ve missed so much looking down, missed what was right in front of me out of fear. I realized a while ago during my practice that I don’t have to look down so much anymore. I have the stability and wisdom to put my feet in the right place, to look people in the eye, to fly high above the ground and to soar towards my biggest goals and dreams.”
“So when you are truly genuine,
there will invariably be people who
do not accept you. And in that case,
you must be your own badass self,
“If you can’t let love in, then
you can’t really give it back.”
– Chris Martin
“Owning our story can be
hard but not nearly as
difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy –
the experiences that make up the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the
infinite power of our light.”
– Brene Brown
“We are so often caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey,
especially the goodness of the people we meet on the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling, don’t overlook it.”
“Never take a person for granted. Hold every
person close to your heart cause you might wake up one day and realize that you’ve lost a diamond while you were too busy collecting stones.”
“Pain and pleasure are the crests
and valleys of the waves in the ocean of bliss.” Life in and by itself is blissful, and that our mind is mostly a dream machine, driven by desire for pleasure and avoidance of pain. Life is an ocean – an endless, boundless ocean of bliss. The waves of this ocean simply
define the surface. Sometimes the surface is calm, sometimes it is stormy, but underneath is the same bliss that we all share in our soul. Besides the desire to be happy it is also
human nature to be sad and absorbed by the mostly self-created mental misery. The human experience is a fine balance between opposing yin and yang energies, between joy and sadness, self-confidence and self-doubt, pleasure and pain. This fine play of opposing energies makes life interesting, but it also makes one want to take a deep breath and come to rest in the present moment.”
– Uliana Kostareva
“When I went to school,
they asked me what I wanted
to be when I grew up.
I wrote down “happy”.
They told me I didn’t
understand the assignment,
and I told the, they didn’t
– John Lennon
“The beauty of life is,
while we cannot undo what is done, we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change… So that every new moment is spent not in regret, guilt,
fear or anger, but in wisdom,
understanding and love.”
“When you blame yourself, you learn from it. If you blame someone else, you don’t learn nothing cause hey, it’s not your fault, it’s his fault, over there.”
– Joe Stummer
“When something goes wrong, it’s more important to decide who is going
to fix it than who’s going
“You can’t change what’s
going on around you until you start changing what’s going on within you.”
“If you want to get over a
problem, stop talking about it. Your mind affects your mouth and your mouth affects your mind. It’s difficult to stop
talking about a situation until you stop thinking about it.”
“Don’t waste words on people who deserve your silence.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is nothing at all. And remember a positive
attitude gives you power over your circumstances instead
of your circumstances having power over you.”
“Life doesn’t give you the people you want, it gives you the people you need: to love you, to hate you, to make you, to break you. And to make you the person you are meant to be.”
“I have suffered loss and I have
caused suffering losses. I have loved and been left and left love. I have been
abandoned and been the abandoner.
I have hated and been the hater.
Each time, the one in front of me has served to teach me a lesson that has lead me to a kinder, gentler, wise me. What is in front of me isn’t an
accident, I put it there and it’s there
to teach me a lesson. It’s takes
wisdom that comes from the ability
to concentrate on each moment
which allows me to see the lessons.”
“There are things that we don’t want to happen, but have to accept. Things we don’t want to know, but have to learn. And people we can’t live without, but have to let go.”
“Giving up doesn’t mean you are weak. Sometimes it means you are strong enough to let go.”
“One of the hardest decisions you’ve ever face is life is choosing whether to walk away or try harder.”
“Everybody’s got past. The past does not equal the future unless you live there.”
“One of the most difficult tasks
in life is removing someone from your heart.”
“Maybe there’s something you’re afraid to say, or someone you’re afraid to love, or somewhere you’re afraid to go. It’s gonna hurt.
It’s gonna hurt because it matters.”
– John Green
“The only way to travel is forward, but every now and then, you’re
permitted to look back, remember, and laugh. But don’t waste too
much time looking back…start moving forward again…it’s
the only way to travel.”
– D.Jinelle Cherry
If just one line in any one of these quotes moves you…moves you internally to take positive action externally, then this becomes a great gift. Did I plagiarize? Most definitely, but I did give credit when the author was mentioned and sometimes, I would place three different quotes together and somehow the dots connected.
You can have the best sequences of poses, the best environment, peer support, inspirational music and the best instructor but if an individual doesn’t have the inner desire, there really is nothing. Selective words can open a window to go inside and start a fire. When I first started, my topics were things like perseverance, challenging yourself, pushing harder etc. which are awesome, but one day I quoted a life lesson and after class members asked for the quote. Today, the quotes are just good stuff for the soul.
Eric calls teaching yoga with weights his “knitting class”. Eric has owned an advertising agency since 1995 and calls this career the best job in the world because it utilizes both the creative and analytical sides of the brain. When not teaching, working or publishing YogaHawaiiMagazine.com Eric is enjoying the Hawaiian lifestyle to the fullest.
Eric raised two grown children and was a chemistry/art major at Brown University where he played collegiate football. He is “walking”…check that “running” testament that yoga heals old injuries and preserves the body for future play.
“My philosophy is: It’s none of my business what people say of me and think of me. I am what I am and I do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. And it makes life so much easier.” – Anthony Hopkins
